The Movie The Passion of
the Christ
by Scott Card
Can we see how the very message of the movie The
Passion is being played out in real life?
Jesus took on sin. Whose sin? Everyone's sin.
Why was Jesus so brutally tortured to the death? Because the world was
forced to look upon Him who was made sin in their place. Sin is ugly,
detestable, and worthy of disdain. In hating Jesus, we are hating ourselves.
But in embracing what Jesus did for all of us, we can look upon Him with
appreciation.
Those who reject this movie are actually rejecting the notion that they
are not good enough on their own merits, their own efforts, their own
wisdom and that they might need someone else greater than themselves to
make up the difference for them. It is so much easier to disdain someone
else than to humble oneself.
Those who reject the movie, and persecute Mel Gibson are no different
from those in the movie that were brutalizing Jesus. These are the very
people He died for. (Not to forget however, that we all are these people).
It makes one ponder on the higher Divine love He had for us. The kind
of love that says "Go on and hate Me, beat Me, spit on Me, whip Me
till My insides are hanging out. Nail Me to a cross and leave Me there
until I die. I still love you."
Isn't it amazing how such a humble act of unconditional love can generate
such venomous anger in so many. But then we know that anger is really
just a form of fear and pride.
